IN ONE SENTENCE

Working with AI is not a single method: it's two radically different modes of collaboration.

THE OBSERVATION

Ethan Mollick, drawing on Garry Kasparov's concept of centaur chess, distinguishes two fundamental modes of working with AI. This distinction concretely determines how to structure your teams and processes. Most companies practice the centaur mode without knowing it: they divide tasks between humans and AI in a binary way. But the cyborg mode, more powerful and more subtle, remains largely underexploited.

WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Centaur mode: divide and conquer

The centaur is half human, half horse: two distinct parts. In this mode, you clearly divide the work: AI handles the emails, you do the analysis. AI generates the reports, you make the decisions. It's the most intuitive mode and the natural entry point for most teams.

Cyborg mode: merge to create

The cyborg is more integrated: human and machine become one. Mollick describes how he wrote his book in cyborg mode. AI barely wrote any text, but it was involved in every step. Stuck on a sentence? 30 suggestions. A chapter finished? AI reviews it and challenges the structure. His Substack articles? Multiple AIs review them and provide feedback before publication.

When to use which

The centaur works for tasks where separation is natural: delegating mechanical work. The cyborg works for creative and strategic tasks where quality comes from continuous interaction between your expertise and AI's capabilities.

WHAT THIS CHANGES FOR YOU

  • Identify which processes are centaur (delegation) and which are cyborg (co-creation)
  • Train your teams in both modes: the centaur is intuitive, the cyborg must be learned
  • For creative and strategic work, invest in cyborg mode: AI feedback, iteration, constant challenging
  • Don't limit yourself to delegating boring tasks: explore how AI can amplify your strengths
À retenir

Centaur or cyborg, the choice is not binary: it's a spectrum. Understanding the difference allows you to structure human-AI collaboration; delegation for the repetitive, co-creation for the strategic. Source: Ethan Mollick, Strange Loop Podcast (Sana Labs), June 2025.
