Read the Founder, Not the Pitch Deck
IN ONE SENTENCE
A founder's background is the best leading indicator of a tech company's trajectory. The current product shows you the past. The founder shows you the future.
THE OBSERVATION
We evaluate tech companies by their products, their metrics, their announcements. But this data is retrospective: it shows what's already been done. To anticipate, you need to look upstream: the company's culture. And culture is an extension of the founder.
WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND
The founder's background imprints the entire organization's DNA:
Founder from incubation / VC
Culture of rapid testing. Launch, measure, iterate. Speed trumps perfection. Diversify bets. See what sticks.
Founder from scientific research
Culture of rigor. Solve one problem in depth before moving to the next. Precision trumps coverage. Concentrate everything on one front.
Neither approach is inherently superior. But they produce radically different companies; in their product, their pace, and especially in their trade-offs.
WHAT THIS CHANGES FOR YOU
- Before adopting a tool, study the founder's resume. Their background predicts the roadmap better than any keynote.
- Apply the principle to yourself. Your own background shapes your company; identify your biases and compensate for them.
- Beware of statements that contradict the DNA. An incubation company promising rigor, or a lab promising speed, believe actions, not words.
Tomorrow's AI founders won't be smarter than today's. But they'll carry a clearer understanding of what they cannot do, and that's the DNA of a great company.
